SURVIVING YOUR CALIFORNIA DIY KITCHEN REMODEL

If you watch a good amount of HGTV, you begin to pretty much believe you can install a backsplash in one afternoon, swap your laminate floors with hardwood in one evening and transition your kitchen into something amazing over the course of a weekend. One problem, the gap between “before” and “after” is many times longer than you think, and existing without the use of your kitchen is not normally a pretty picture.

There are many things you can do to make a California kitchen remodel easier. Preparing yourself before you start makes all the difference when your Saturday and Sunday project turns into a month-long DIY marathon.

CALIFORNIA KITCHEN REMODELING TIPS

Pack
If you are painting or replacing your cabinets, sort, pack, and label your kitchen things so you can find them easily when you need them.

Find a Temporary Kitchen
If you have a dining room, that room can be a perfect place for a makeshift kitchen. If not, then you can utilize the garage, basement, or even the backyard. Get your makeshift kitchen prepared with the basics (i.e. toaster, electric grill, microwave, slow cooker, etc.) Put out a smaller set of dishes (or perhaps paper plates) and utensils. Organize it all in plastic tubs in another area that can stay somewhat undisturbed.

Meal Plan
Isolate your options for alternative cooking utilizing electric appliances, outdoor cooking, or non-cooked meals. Eating out all day might sound great at first (and California can be a paradise for food lovers), but it will undoubtedly get old and expensive. If possible, prepare meals ahead of time that can be heated back up in the microwave. Keep a bunch of non-perishable snacks around, and a cooler full of cold drinks.

Timing
If you have the opportunity to choose, plan your remodel for spring or summer or early fall. An outside grill and a kid’s pool for dishes can make things much easier, and lets you to keep preparing most meals outside.

Pet Plan
If you by chance have pets, secure a safe place for them to spend their time while the remodel is in progress. It can be and normally is a bit disruptive to both workers and pups to have their spaces invaded.

Family Meals
Even if your house is literally in the mode of demolition, try to keep your family routines as close to normal as you possibly can. You can use a blanket or tablecloth to prepare an indoor or outdoor picnic and maintain meals for the family as much as possible. Preserving this important ritual can help kids deal with craziness and help their parents remember the most important things after a long day of remodeling headaches.
