Top 5 Reasons Why Your Bosch Dishwasher Won’t Start
Richard S.

When your dishwasher won’t turn on, the prospect of handwashing every dish is enough to make you consider a new appliance. Fortunately, most starting issues can be resolved with a simple fix. Why won’t my Bosch dishwasher turn on? The wrong setting can prevent the immediate start of a wash cycle. When your Bosch dishwasher won’t start, troubleshoot the problem with these likely causes.

Bosch Dishwasher Won’t Start? Here’s What To Do.

Though some starting issues can be addressed with a simple adjustment, part failures will require a professional repair. Here’s how to plan the right solution when your Bosch dishwasher won’t start.

#1. Check the Power Source

Before troubleshooting malfunctions first make sure your dishwasher is receiving power. A Bosch dishwasher won’t start without consistent access to adequate electricity.

Here’s how to assess dishwasher power sources :

  • Inspect the power cord : Make sure the cord is damage-free and properly plugged into a functioning outlet. Avoid using an extension cord that can’t accommodate the voltage required.
  • Make sure the power switch is on : In many cases, a dishwasher’s power is connected to a kitchen switch. Identify the switch and make sure it’s in the on position, checking under the sink if necessary.
  • Look for tripped breakers : Reset any tripped breakers in your home’s circuit breaker box.

#2. Adjust Bosch Dishwasher Settings

If the dishwasher isn’t started properly, it won’t begin a wash cycle. Wondering how to start a Bosch dishwasher? A wash cycle must first be selected before pressing the Start button. When starting the dishwasher, be sure to also check the control panel for settings that can prevent a wash cycle from beginning.

The following issues and settings can prevent a Bosch dishwasher from starting immediately :

  • Child Lock : If the Bosch dishwasher child lock feature is enabled, all control panel functions lock to prevent accidental use.
  • Delay Start : This feature delays the start of a cycle to a preset later time.
  • Error codes : These number and letter combinations alert you to potential problems, including starting issues.
  • Damaged control panel: If the control panel gets wet or suffers electrical damage the dishwasher won’t respond to commands. A damaged control panel must be professionally replaced.

Refer to your Bosch dishwasher manual to determine how to disable certain functions and decipher error codes.

#3. Dishwasher Door Isn’t Latched

As a safety feature, and to prevent leaks, a Bosch dishwasher won’t start until the door is completely closed and latched. Always close the door firmly to ensure that it’s closed and the latch is engaged. Once enabled, the latch prompts the door switch to signal the internal control panel and start a wash cycle.

If the door is properly closed and the dishwasher door won’t latch , it may be broken. Check the latch for damage or use a multimeter to test for its continuity. A broken latch must be replaced.

#4. Check the Water Supply

If it has power but your Bosch dishwasher won’t start or fill with water, there may be a water supply issue.

The following water supply problems can prevent an immediate start :

  • Supply valve is off : Make sure the valve is turned on so water can flow from your home supply.
  • Kinked water inlet hose : If the water inlet hose is kinked, it can block water flow from your home supply. Gently straighten any kinks, disconnecting the hose, if necessary, to restore flow.
  • Faulty water inlet valve : This valve is attached to the water inlet hose connection, opening and closing to allow for water flow from your home supply. If the valve is faulty or stuck closed, water may not flow to the dishwasher, preventing it from starting. In this case, the valve can’t be repaired and must be professionally replaced.

#5. Faulty Bosch Dishwasher Parts

If the above steps still leave your Bosch dishwasher not starting, a faulty part may be responsible.

The following part failures stop the dishwasher from starting and require a professional  Bosch dishwasher repair service :

  • Thermal fuse : When the thermal fuse blows, all dishwasher function ceases to prevent overheating, though the fuse can also blow if it’s faulty. Once the fuse blows, the dishwasher can’t start until it’s replaced.
  • Control board : If the dishwasher’s internal control board is damaged, it won’t relay power or process starting commands.
  • Timer : A faulty timer won’t send power to the appropriate dishwasher function or initiate a wash cycle at the right time.
