If you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist right? If only it were that simple! Hopefully you’ve been using your range vent hood whenever you’re cooking. It’s doing an important job of filtering odors, smoke, grease and even harmful gasses. Which means its filters are getting pretty dirty! Eventually they may need to be replaced, but oftentimes you can simply wash them for way less. All you’ll need is hot or boiling water (use caution), degreasing dish soap, baking soda, non-abrasive scrub brush, a dish cloth, and these 7 easy steps.

1. Remove Hood Vent Filters: The majority of filters will pop or slide out from underneath. Check your manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure this is done correctly.

2. Boil Some Water and Fill Your Sink (or a bucket): This can also be done in a large pot if you have one big enough. Hot water from the tap might do the job, but boiling water is likely to clean better. Always use caution when working with high heat.

3. Add Baking Soda and Dish Soap: Add a good squeeze of the dish soap and add ¼ cup of baking soda into your hot water. Stir water solution with the brush, so you don’t burn your hand, until the water has become soapy.

4. Insert Greasy Filters: The filters should be fully immersed in your water solution, and let them soak for 15-20 minutes.

5. Scrub: After they’re done soaking, take your non-abrasive brush and give those filters a good scrub. Add more dish soap, as needed.

6. Rinse and Dry: Using hot water, rinse the filters. Dry with a clean cloth or you can use paper towels. Those filters should look much better.

7. Put Them Back: Place the filters into the hood, as you found them (except they’re clean now). And that’s it!
