KitchenAid Dishwasher Not Draining – Troubleshooting Guide
Brayden J.

Do you have a KitchenAid dishwasher not draining? Ugh. It’s frustrating to have dirty dishwater backing up and keeping you from being able to run your dishwasher. We have a few tips for troubleshooting this pesky problem.

Troubleshooting Guide: KitchenAid Dishwasher Not Draining

If you have a KitchenAid dishwasher not draining, try these troubleshooting tips to help identify the cause.

Drain Pump Defective

A possible cause for a KitchenAid dishwasher not draining is a defective drain pump. The drain pump forces the water through the drain hose. If you continue to find water in bottom of dishwasher, a failed pump may be the culprit. The pump is not repairable – if you have a defective pump it needs to be replaced.

Clogged Drain Valve

Over time, your dishwasher filters a lot of food particles and debris through the drain valve and hose. If the drain valve becomes clogged, the dishwasher won’t drain properly. Clean out the drain valve to allow adequate water flow. If the valve is clear and still won’t actuate, it needs to be replaced.

Clogged Drain Hose

A clogged drain hose will be totally unproductive for proper drainage. Remove the hose from both the dishwasher and sink drain and clean it out thoroughly. The dishwasher drain branch and garbage disposal are the most common places to find clogs in the hose. Once the hose is free from debris, water should drain just fine.

Clogged Garbage Disposal

A clogged disposal is a common cause if your dishwasher water doesn’t drain. Before you mess with the garbage disposal, be sure to unplug it. Remove the dishwasher drain hose and clean out the fittings on the disposal as well as the hose.

It’s also a good idea to use an Allen wrench to manually maneuver the grinder from the bottom of the disposal unit to break up what’s inside the disposal housing.

If your garbage disposal was recently installed and is indeed connected to your dishwasher, check to make sure the drain plug in the drain hose was removed.

Garbage disposals are sold with a solid plug in the drain hose. If the dishwasher is not connected to the garbage disposal, the plug needs to stay in place. However, when the dishwasher and garbage disposal are connected, the plug must be removed for everything to function properly.
