You may have noticed that your grocery bill has increased recently. It’s unfortunate, but it’s happening. You may be asking yourself, what does an appliance repair company have to do with me saving money on groceries, but maintaining and properly using your refrigerator and freezer could save you money on groceries. Let’s take a look at proper food storage in your refrigerator.
Low Humidity Drawer (window open) – It’s best to put fruit and vegetables that spoil quickly into this drawer. Mainly fruits and vegetables that are not overly sensitive to moisture loss and emit ethylene gas. The latter is what causes the changes in texture, softening and color. If the gas cannot escape, it will ripen your food quicker. Here are a few of the more common items that we would suggest keeping in this drawer: Apples, avocado, cantaloupe, kiwi, mango, papaya, peaches, pears, and plums.
High Humidity Drawer (window closed) – This drawer setting is more for your leafy greens. The moisture obtained from having the window closed, will keep these items crispy and fresh for a longer period of time. Vegetables that love this setting are: Broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, green beans, herbs, kale, lettuce, okra, peppers, spinach, strawberries, summer squash, and swiss chard.
